Exterior Lead Engineer – Automotive
We are seeking an Exterior Lead Engineer to take ownership of key exterior systems across a major automotive programme. This role is ideal for someone with strong experience in bumper, grille, exterior trim, finishers, and underfloor/underbody systems, plus hands-on CAD capability.
As an Exterior Lead Engineer, you will lead the full design and development lifecycle from concept through to production, ensuring components meet requirements for quality, cost, weight, durability, aerodynamics, materials, safety and manufacturing feasibility. You will work closely with cross-functional engineering teams, suppliers and programme stakeholders to deliver exterior commodities to plan.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead design and development of bumper, grille, exterior finisher and underfloor systems
- Drive CAD development using CATIA V6 / 3DX
- Ensure components meet regulatory, safety and aerodynamic requirements
- Manage APQP deliverables, change control and engineering release (including WERS/iCreate)
- Conduct issue resolution with attribute, component and vehicle teams
- Support vehicle test plans, development reviews and sign-off activities
- Maintain accurate documentation including design histories, compliance evidence and programme updates
Must-Have Skills
- Strong automotive exterior engineering background
- Proven experience with bumpers, grilles, trim, appliqués, shields or underbody systems
- Proficiency in CATIA V6 / 3DX and plastics/injection moulding design
- Understanding of tooling, manufacturing processes and material selection
- Ability to lead workstreams and manage suppliers
Good-to-Have
- APQP, WERS, iCreate, DVP or structured problem-solving experience
- Exposure to component, system or vehicle-level verification
- Project or programme management familiarity
