Job Description:
We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Planning Officer to join our team.
Contract & Pay:
- Hours: 37 per week
- Pay: £25.00 per hour (umbrella)
- Duration: 3 months+
- Location: Primarily remote, with induction and occasional office/site visits
About the Role:
You will have a proven track record in managing major planning applications, including industrial developments and large-scale residential schemes (up to 200 dwellings). You will be confident picking up applications mid-process and progressing them to determination with minimal supervision.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage and determine major planning applications
- Undertake site visits and prepare professional reports
- Negotiate and monitor Section 106 agreements
- Represent the Council at committees, hearings, and inquiries
- Provide expert planning advice to colleagues, Elected Members, and the public
- Work effectively in a largely remote setting using IT systems (Idox Uniform experience desirable)
Essential Skills & Experience:
- In-depth knowledge of planning policy, legislation, and local government processes
- Strong organisational, analytical, and negotiation skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation ability
- Experience working with Elected Members and presenting at planning committees
- Ability to work independently and manage own caseload effectively
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and planning-related software
- Full driving licence and access to transport for site visits
Additional Information:
- Monthly evening attendance at planning committee meetings is required
- Basic induction will be provided before remote working commences
- Must be eligible to work in the UK and able to provide 2 years’ references
