Refrigeration Design Engineer (Hybrid)

Job Description:

We are seeking a skilled Refrigeration Design Engineer to join our growing team. In this hybrid role, you will be responsible for the design and proposal of light industrial and commercial refrigeration systems, ensuring design solutions meet customer requirements, legislative standards, and company best practices. You will work from initial concept through to final design packages, supporting project handovers and providing technical expertise throughout the project lifecycle.

Design & Engineering

• Create detailed refrigeration system designs from an initial brief and/or drawings.

• Produce precise design documentation including:

  • Cold room heat load calculations

  • Cabinet heat load calculations

  • Engineering data sheets

  • Pipework sizing and isometric drawings

  • Equipment selections and associated design calculations

• Ensure all designs comply with the latest industry standards, internal procedures, and legislative requirements.

Technical & Project Support

• Prepare design information for project handovers including:

  • Equipment/supplier/sub-contractor procurement schedules

  • Identification of PED category and notification to compliance team if CAT 4

  • Calculation of system refrigerant charge

  • High-level program of works and phasing (if required)

• Work with internal and external stakeholders to ensure technical accuracy and project success.

Customer Interaction

• Present and communicate design solutions clearly to customers, including costings, technical details, compliance considerations, and justification of selections.

General

• Support ongoing and new projects from concept through to successful completion.

• Attend Leicester office as required and undertake site visits/surveys.

• Perform day-to-day tasks as requested by your line manager.

• Proven experience in refrigeration system design within industrial or commercial environments.

• Essential: Strong knowledge of CO₂ refrigeration systems.

• Desirable: Experience with glycol/chiller systems.

• Proficient in performing refrigeration heat load calculations and producing engineering design documentation.

• Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications.

• Strong communication skills-both written and verbal.

• Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
