Job Description
An ambitious and motivated Second in Science is required to support the leadership and development of a successful Science department. This role is ideal for an outstanding classroom practitioner who demonstrates high professional standards, strong subject knowledge and a commitment to achieving excellent outcomes for students.
Working closely with the Head of Department, the successful candidate will contribute to the strategic development and day-to-day leadership of the Science faculty. The role involves supporting teaching and learning, monitoring student progress and helping to drive continuous improvement across Key Stages 3 and 4.
The postholder will play an important role in promoting a culture of high expectations, collaboration and academic excellence within the department.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Head of Department with the leadership and organisation of the Science department.
- Contribute to the strategic development and ongoing improvement of the Science curriculum.
- Promote enthusiasm for Science, encouraging both staff and students to engage with the subject and recognise its wider importance.
- Provide leadership for the department in the absence of the Head of Department.
- Monitor student progress and attainment, ensuring students achieve at least expected levels of progress.
- Support the implementation of departmental systems, policies and procedures across Key Stages 3 and 4.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to review teaching and learning practices and improve student outcomes.
- Analyse student work and performance data to inform curriculum planning and intervention strategies.
- Report regularly on student progress to senior leaders and departmental leadership.
- Lead targeted intervention strategies to support underachieving students.
- Contribute to departmental evaluation, development planning and quality improvement.
- Undertake additional responsibilities as required to support the effective running of the department.
Requirements
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
- Proven track record of successful teaching within Science at secondary level.
- Strong subject knowledge and passion for Science education.
- Ability to support departmental leadership and contribute to curriculum development.
- Experience using assessment data to monitor progress and raise attainment.
- Excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills.
- High expectations of student behaviour, engagement and achievement.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
