Job description

Most consultancies hand you a slice of a project and send you on your way. This Lancashire practice does the lot. Condition surveys and defect investigations, design, contract administration and procurement, then the refurbishments and new builds that follow, all handled by one team that sits together.

For a surveyor, that range is the draw. You'll see a job through from the first site visit to handover, work alongside architects in the same office, and build the sort of all-round experience that takes years to pick up in a more specialised firm. The client base is a mix of public sector and commercial, with plenty of work for schools and other public buildings.

The work

  • Carry out condition surveys and defect investigations, and write clear reports with practical recommendations
  • Design and manage refurbishment, extension and new-build projects through every stage
  • Administer building contracts (JCT) from appointment to completion, including valuations, variations and certificates
  • Prepare specifications, schedules of work and tender documentation
  • Support procurement: tender returns, appraisals and contractor appointments
  • Manage project finances, programmes and client reporting
  • Attend site and client meetings, and inspect work on site for quality and compliance
  • Advise on Building Regulations, health and safety and planning requirements
  • Work with architects and other in-house disciplines so advice is joined up from day one

You

  • Building surveying experience within a consultancy
  • MRICS or working towards
  • Comfortable running projects of your own and keeping clients informed
  • Curious about the technical side as well as the client side
  • Organised, pragmatic, and able to write a report people actually read
  • Full driving licence for site visits

The package

  • Competitive salary (£40,000 - £55,000)
  • Hybrid working
  • Benefits, professional fees support, CPD and progression
