Role:   CNC Turning - Programmer, Setter & Operator - Slant Bed & Mill-Turn

Join our highly skilled and flexible manufacturing team

Sheffield Precision Medical is looking for an experienced and flexible CNC Programmer, Setter & Operator – Slant Bed & Mill-Turn to join our skilled manufacturing team.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced CNC machinist who enjoys working on a challenging and varied product range, and wants to develop their skills within a supportive and technically focused manufacturing environment.

You'll work in a clean manufacturing environment, taking responsibility for setting, operating and programming CNC slant-bed lathes and mill-turn machines, producing high-quality precision components to customer drawings while maintaining consistently high standards of quality and output.

The Role at a Glance

Position:   CNC Programmer, Setter & Operator – Slant Bed & Mill-Turn

Shift Pattern:   Standard day shift – 07:00–15:00, Monday–Friday

You will be responsible for the programming, setting and operation of Haas CNC machinery, including DS-30Y and ST-20Y Mill-Turn centres and SL-20 Slant Bed Lathes, producing precision components to customer specification.

You will be expected to read and interpret engineering drawings, understand geometric tolerances and select appropriate tooling and machining strategies to achieve the required component quality and production targets.

You will also carry out your own in-process and final inspection using a range of precision measuring equipment, including verniers, micrometers, gauges and other inspection equipment.

Working closely with the Production Engineering and Quality teams, you will play an important role in ensuring components are manufactured efficiently, accurately and consistently, while contributing to continuous improvement across the manufacturing process.

As part of your development, you will have the opportunity to learn and operate a range of precision inspection equipment, including CMMs, shadow graphs and CNC optical measurement systems.

You won't be expected to know everything from day one. You'll be supported by experienced colleagues who are happy to share their knowledge, and we encourage people to ask questions, develop their skills and learn from each other.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Programme, set and operate CNC slant bed lathes and mill-turn machines to manufacture precision components in accordance with engineering drawings, specifications and customer requirements.

• Create, modify and optimise CNC programs to achieve required component quality, cycle times and production targets.

• Set CNC machines accurately, including tooling, workholding, cutting tools, offsets and other machine setup requirements.

• Set and utilise live tooling and milling operations as required for mill-turn components.

• Carry out machine prove-outs and first-off inspections, making appropriate program, tooling and offset adjustments to achieve dimensional and quality requirements.

• Interpret engineering drawings, 3D models, specifications and geometric tolerances to ensure components are manufactured correctly.

• Select appropriate cutting tools, tooling strategies and machining parameters based on the material, component geometry and required finish.

• Determine suitable speeds, feeds and depths of cut to optimise machining performance and tool life.

• Monitor machining throughout production, identifying and resolving issues such as tool wear, dimensional variation, surface finish and machining problems.

• Work closely with Production Engineering and Quality teams to resolve technical, machining and production issues.

• Carry out in-process and final dimensional inspections using appropriate measuring equipment, including verniers, micrometers, gauges and other precision inspection equipment.

• Complete production and inspection documentation accurately, ensuring full traceability and compliance with company procedures.

• Identify opportunities to improve machining processes, reduce cycle times, minimise scrap and improve tool life while maintaining required quality standards.

• Contribute to the continuous improvement of machining processes, methods and manufacturing efficiency.

• Maintain machines, tooling and the working area to a high standard, ensuring a clean, safe and organised working environment.

• Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with company quality procedures, health and safety requirements and customer specifications.

• Communicate effectively with colleagues and management regarding production priorities, machine performance, quality issues and any problems affecting delivery.

• Support and assist other members of the manufacturing team where required, sharing knowledge and best practice.

• Work collaboratively with the wider production team to achieve customer priorities, production schedules, quality standards and delivery targets.

Desired Experience & Skills

• Proven experience in CNC turning, ideally including lathes and/or mill-turn machines.

• Experience and capability in CNC programming, setting and operating.

• Experience of live tooling and milling operations on CNC turning or mill-turn machinery.

• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, including dimensional and geometric tolerances.

• Good understanding of CNC machining principles, tooling and cutting parameters.

• Experience of carrying out machine prove-outs and making program, tooling and offset adjustments.

• Experience of working with a variety of engineering materials and selecting appropriate tooling and machining strategies.

• Sound experience using basic precision inspection equipment, including verniers, micrometers and gauges.

• Experience of maintaining accurate production and inspection records.

• Computer literate, with the ability to quickly learn and use company software and manufacturing systems.

• A proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement.

Personal Qualities

You'll be someone who:

• Takes pride in producing high-quality precision components.

• Is reliable, responsible and has good timekeeping.

• Works well independently while also contributing positively to a team.

• Takes ownership of the quality of their work and production output.

• Has a practical and proactive approach to solving machining and production problems.

• Is willing to share knowledge and support colleagues.

• Has a positive attitude and is willing to learn and develop new skills.

• Is flexible and able to adapt to changing production requirements.

• Is committed to maintaining high standards of health, safety and good working practices.

• Understands the importance of meeting customer requirements, quality standards and production deadlines.
