This is a hands-on technical leadership position, ideal for an engineer who enjoys resolving challenging electrical issues, influencing engineering decisions and mentoring colleagues while remaining closely involved in day-to-day technical operations.

You will play a key role in maintaining resilient electrical services that support continuous hospital operations and patient care, working collaboratively with engineering teams, specialist contractors and senior stakeholders to drive reliability and continuous improvement.

📋 Responsibilities & Duties

• ⚡ Act as the senior electrical technical specialist across a complex healthcare estate, providing expert guidance on critical electrical infrastructure.

• 🔧 Lead the investigation, diagnosis and resolution of complex electrical faults affecting essential building services and critical systems.

• 🔌 Provide technical expertise across high-voltage (HV) and low-voltage (LV) electrical distribution networks, ensuring safe, reliable and efficient operation.

• ⚙️ Oversee technical matters relating to standby generators, UPS systems and critical power supplies to support operational resilience.

• 🦺 Undertake Authorised Person (AP) duties and ensure safe systems of work, electrical safety procedures and operational controls are maintained.

• 📈 Support electrical lifecycle projects, asset replacement programmes and engineering improvement initiatives across the estate.

• 👷 Provide technical leadership, mentoring and knowledge sharing to engineering colleagues, supporting capability development and consistent engineering standards.

• 🤝 Work closely with hospital stakeholders, Authorising Engineers, specialist contractors and engineering teams to maintain service delivery and compliance.

• 📚 Ensure all electrical engineering activities comply with relevant legislation, technical standards and applicable healthcare engineering guidance.

• 🔍 Support the identification, assessment and management of electrical risks, implementing appropriate measures to protect people, assets and critical services.

• 🚀 Identify opportunities to improve system reliability, engineering processes, maintenance strategies and overall operational performance.

• 📞 Participate in the senior technical on-call and escalation rota, providing support for critical electrical issues outside normal working hours where required.

👤 Requirements

• Proven experience in a senior electrical engineering, electrical technical specialist or engineering leadership role.

• A recognised electrical apprenticeship and relevant electrical engineering qualifications.

• Strong technical knowledge and practical experience of HV and LV electrical distribution systems.

• Current or previous Authorised Person (AP) status, ideally covering HV and/or LV electrical systems.

• Extensive experience in electrical fault-finding, diagnostics and complex technical problem-solving.

• A strong understanding of electrical safety, statutory compliance, risk management and safe systems of work.

• A current 18th Edition Wiring Regulations qualification.

• Relevant electrical inspection and testing qualifications.

• Experience working with critical electrical infrastructure and maintaining the reliability of essential services.

• The ability to provide technical leadership, influence engineering decisions and support effective problem-solving.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to engage with engineers, contractors, Authorising Engineers and senior stakeholders.

• A proactive, methodical approach to engineering challenges, with a strong focus on safety, reliability and continuous improvement.

⭐ Desirable Experience & Qualifications

• Experience working within a healthcare estate, acute hospital or similarly complex, safety-critical environment.

• Knowledge of Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs) and healthcare engineering compliance requirements.

• Experience working within Private Finance Initiative (PFI) estates or other critical operational environments.

• Technical knowledge of standby generation, UPS systems, emergency power supplies and critical power resilience.

• Experience supporting electrical lifecycle works, asset replacement programmes and infrastructure upgrades.

• Asbestos awareness training.

• IOSH, NEBOSH or equivalent health and safety qualifications.
