Job description

Are you looking to build your career within a laboratory and technical environment?

Do you have a scientific background with a practical, hands-on approach and strong attention to detail?

We're supporting a leading engineering and manufacturing business in Fareham who are looking for a Laboratory Technician to join their Technical Services team.

Whether you already have laboratory experience or you're a Science graduate or A-Level/BTEC qualified candidate looking for your first laboratory opportunity, we'd be interested in speaking with you.

What's the role all about?

As the Laboratory Technician, you'll carry out a variety of laboratory testing and analysis on filter materials, filtration equipment and manufactured products.

You'll be involved in everything from practical testing and microscopy through to analysing results, producing technical reports and communicating findings to internal and external customers.

It's a varied position combining hands-on laboratory work, scientific analysis, reporting and administration, making it a great opportunity for someone looking to develop their technical experience within an engineering environment.

What will you be doing?

  • Carry out laboratory testing on filter materials and manufactured products
  • Complete a variety of tests including tensile strength, permeability and bubble point testing
  • Carry out bead challenge and porometry testing
  • Support sulphate reducing bacteria and Strauss Intergranular Corrosion resistance testing
  • Prepare and analyse filters, media and materials
  • Investigate product performance, build quality and the impact of different operating environments
  • Use SEM / EDX, microscopes and digital image analysis to investigate contaminants and product quality
  • Analyse laboratory data and present findings using Word and Excel
  • Produce clear test reports for internal and external customers
  • Communicate technical findings with colleagues and customers
  • Maintain calibration records and the Technical Services calibration database
  • Support laboratory supply purchasing and general laboratory administration
  • Maintain a clean, organised and safe laboratory environment

What do you need?

We're looking for someone with:

  • A-Level, BTEC or equivalent qualification in a scientific subject
  • A good scientific understanding
  • Strong practical skills
  • Good Maths and English
  • Confidence using Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Good communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving ability
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently when required

Previous laboratory experience would be beneficial, but it isn't essential.

Desirable

It would be particularly beneficial if you have:

  • A degree in Chemistry, Physics, Biology or a related scientific subject
  • Previous laboratory experience
  • Experience within manufacturing, engineering or materials testing
  • Exposure to microscopy, SEM/EDX or materials analysis

About you

You'll be someone who enjoys the practical side of science and isn't afraid to get hands-on with testing and investigation.

You'll be:

  • Practical and methodical
  • Curious and keen to understand why things happen
  • Accurate and detail-focused
  • Flexible in your approach
  • Comfortable working under pressure
  • Confident working on your own initiative
  • A good communicator
  • Keen to learn and develop your technical knowledge

You don't necessarily need years of laboratory experience for this one – the right scientific foundation, practical mindset and willingness to learn are just as important.
