Job description

Multi-skilled, with an electrical or mechanical bias?

Electrical or mechanical, the pay's the same. And whichever side you're stronger on, we'll help you build the other.

What's in it for you

  • Same salary whether your bias is electrical or mechanical
  • Panama 12-hour shift pattern with alternate weekends off
  • Structured training to build capability across both disciplines
  • A real part in moving the site from reactive to proactive maintenance
  • Large-scale corrugating and converting kit, with ongoing investment in automation

About Board 24

Board 24 is the UK's largest independent manufacturer of corrugated sheet board and packaging.

Over 400 people work across Coalville, Preston and Eurocentral, producing more than 500 million m² of board a year.

It's part of the Logson Group, and it runs on five values: Brave, Our Future, Accountable, Respectful, Driven.

The role

You'll join one of four shift teams. Each has four multi-skilled engineers: two electrically biased, two mechanically biased. Everyone works across both disciplines, but you'll need strong competence in your own bias to start with.

Breakdowns are part of the job. But the engineering team is moving away from a reactive culture towards spotting defects early, preventing repeat failures, reliability and asset care. You'll help drive that.

Success looks like working safely, investigating and repairing faults properly first time, proactively identifying potential failures and improvement opportunities, handing equipment back running safely and reliably, and being willing to learn, develop and build capability across both disciplines.

What you'll do

You'll:

  • Respond to breakdowns on corrugating, converting and finished goods lines, and get them running safely and reliably again
  • Investigate faults logically, using schematics, test equipment and PLC or HMI diagnostics where needed
  • Maintain panel components, drives and sensors, or bearings, belts, chains and gearboxes, depending on your bias
  • Carry out planned and preventive maintenance accurately, calibrating and working to tolerances where applicable
  • Spot defects early, tackle the root cause of repeat failures and put forward improvement ideas
  • Work to the relevant RAs, safe systems of work, permits to work, safe isolation/LOTO and site safety procedures
  • Give a clear handover every shift: equipment status, outstanding defects, temporary repairs, safety concerns and follow-up actions, all logged in the CMMS
  • Build your second discipline through the site training programme

What you'll bring

Essential:

  • Level 3 (NVQ or equivalent) in a relevant engineering discipline, or time-served through a recognised engineering apprenticeship
  • Electrical bias: confident reading electrical schematics and working in control panels with multimeters and insulation testers, plus working knowledge of the wiring regulations
  • Mechanical bias: a formal mechanical engineering qualification or time-served mechanical apprenticeship, plus experience maintaining bearings, gears, drives and mechanical assemblies
  • Maintenance experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment
  • Working knowledge of safe isolation, lockout/tagout and permit-to-work systems

Useful, not essential:

  • PLC and HMI fault investigation (Siemens or Allen Bradley)
  • VSDs, soft starters or servo drives
  • Welding, hydraulics or pneumatics training
  • Experience on high-speed production lines

Benefits and culture

Development: structured training in your second discipline. Reliability, asset care and lead engineer roles all sit within the same engineering team, so there's somewhere to grow.

Culture: technical skill is essential, but so is how you work. We want engineers who take ownership, hold high standards, communicate well and keep learning. Nothing gets left for the next shift to find. We're building an engineering culture, not just filling vacancies.

Working arrangements

Panama 12-hour shifts on a 2-2-3 rotation, averaging 42 hours a week across days and nights.
