Mechanical Design Engineer – Special Purpose Machinery / Automation

Location: Leicestershire
Salary: £48,000 – £53,000 + Benefits
Job Type: Permanent

Are you a skilled Mechanical Design Engineer with experience in special purpose machinery, automation, or bespoke equipment design?

A growing engineering company in Leicester is looking for an experienced engineer to take ownership of end-to-end mechanical design projects, working on complex, one-off machinery used across a range of industrial applications.

Key Responsibilities

• Design bespoke special purpose machinery using SolidWorks / 3D CAD
• Produce detailed manufacturing drawings and Bills of Materials (BOMs)
• Mechanical design of automation systems, assembly machinery, and equipment
• Select components including pneumatics, drives, motors, and mechanical systems
• Support build, assembly, and testing phases
• Work closely with electrical, controls, and production teams
• Take projects from concept design through to commissioning

Skills & Experience Required

• Experience as a Mechanical Design Engineer / Design Engineer / Project Engineer
• Ideal experience in automation, machinery, or special purpose equipment
• Strong SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD experience (SolidEdge, Inventor etc.)
• Ability to create production drawings and BOMs
• Understanding of manufacturing processes and assembly
• Experience with mechanical components, mechanisms, and machine design
• Strong problem-solving and project ownership skills
• Based within commuting distance of Leicester / East Midlands
• Full UK work eligibility required
