SEND English Tutor - Leominster

Location: Leominster, Herefordshire
Subject: English

Working Arrangement: In-person

Quantum Scholars are looking for a patient, supportive and experienced SEND English Tutor to provide personalised one-to-one tuition to a young person in Leominster.

The successful tutor will have strong English subject knowledge and experience supporting secondary-aged learners with SEND and/or SEMH needs. You will be confident adapting your teaching style, pace and resources to meet individual learning needs, while creating a calm and positive environment where the learner can build confidence and engage with English.

Experience supporting young people with anxiety, school avoidance, disengagement or challenging behaviour would be highly desirable.

This is an in-person tutoring role and is not online work.

The role may involve:

  • Providing personalised one-to-one English tuition to a secondary-aged learner.

  • Supporting the learner across the Secondary English curriculum, including GCSE where appropriate.

  • Covering English Language and English Literature depending on the learner's needs and the tutor's subject specialism.

  • Identifying gaps in English knowledge and providing targeted support.

  • Breaking down complex English concepts into manageable and accessible steps.

  • Adapting teaching methods, resources and lesson pace to suit individual learning needs.

  • Supporting reading, comprehension, spelling, grammar, vocabulary and written communication skills.

  • Developing confidence in extended writing, analysis and the use of evidence.

  • Supporting GCSE revision, exam preparation and exam technique where appropriate.

  • Supporting learners with reading and writing difficulties or gaps in literacy.

  • Creating a calm, structured and supportive learning environment.

  • Supporting learners who may have experienced barriers to mainstream education.

  • Helping the learner develop confidence, resilience and independence.

  • Encouraging engagement and positive attitudes towards English and learning.

  • Using the learner's interests and strengths to make sessions engaging and accessible.

  • Supporting learners who may experience SEMH needs, anxiety or challenging behaviour.

  • Using positive behaviour strategies and appropriate de-escalation approaches where required.

  • Monitoring progress and providing appropriate feedback.

  • Building a positive and trusting relationship with the learner.

  • Working collaboratively with parents/carers and other professionals involved in the learner's education.

  • Maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality.

  • Following safeguarding procedures and promoting the welfare of the young person.

Essential requirements:

  • Strong English subject knowledge at secondary level.

  • Experience teaching or tutoring English.

  • Experience supporting learners with SEND and/or SEMH needs.

  • Experience providing one-to-one or personalised educational support is desirable.

  • Ability to adapt teaching approaches to meet individual learning needs.

  • Experience supporting learners who may have barriers to mainstream education is desirable.

  • Experience supporting challenging behaviour would be highly desirable.

  • A patient, calm, flexible and empathetic approach.

  • Ability to build positive and trusting relationships with young people.

  • Confidence supporting learners who may be reluctant, anxious or disengaged from education.

  • Strong communication and organisational skills.

  • Reliable and consistent approach to work.

  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

  • Enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.
