Senior Electronics Engineer – Leicester
Location: Leicester, Leicestershire
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
Working Hours: Monday to Friday, daytime hours with flexible start and finish times and an early Friday finish
Working Arrangement: Fully site-based
365 People are recruiting for an experienced Senior Electronics Engineer to join an established, highly specialised engineering and manufacturing business in Leicester.
This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys being hands-on, solving complex technical problems and taking ownership of electronic systems throughout their product lifecycle.
Our client designs and manufactures sophisticated, high-value, low-volume precision engineering equipment used in demanding industrial applications.
Unlike roles focused purely on new product development, this position offers a genuine mixture of electronics design, fault-finding, manufacturing support, product improvements and technical problem-solving.
You'll work closely with an experienced multidisciplinary engineering team, with the opportunity to develop into a technical leadership or people-management position in the future.
The Role
As Senior Electronics Engineer, you'll be responsible for supporting existing electronic products while contributing to new developments and improvements.
Approximately 80% of the role involves sustaining engineering, product support, troubleshooting, obsolescence management and manufacturing-related challenges, with around 20% focused on new product development.
You'll spend a significant amount of time working directly with equipment, electronics assemblies and colleagues across engineering and production, rather than being desk-based all day.
Your responsibilities will include:
Designing and developing electronic circuits and printed circuit boards (PCBs), from initial concept through to testing and implementation.
Investigating, diagnosing and resolving electronic faults at component, PCB and system level.
Supporting manufacturing teams with technical issues, testing, repairs and product improvements.
Managing electronic component obsolescence and identifying suitable replacements or design modifications.
Supporting the development and maintenance of complex electronic and electromechanical systems.
Reviewing electronic designs to ensure reliability, performance and manufacturability.
Working within relevant EMC, electrical safety and regulatory compliance requirements.
Collaborating with mechanical, software, production and other engineering teams to resolve technical challenges.
Providing technical guidance and sharing knowledge with colleagues across the department.
What We're Looking For
We are particularly interested in engineers who have worked with complex, high-value electronic equipment, ideally within low-volume or specialist manufacturing environments.
Essential experience:
A strong background in electronics or electrical engineering, with practical experience designing electronic circuits and PCBs.
Hands-on PCB design experience using Altium, OrCAD, KiCad, Eagle, Mentor Graphics or another electronic CAD package.
The ability to explain electronic designs you've personally developed, including component selection, circuit functionality and design decisions.
Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills, including testing and troubleshooting electronic circuits, PCBs and complete systems.
Experience supporting electronic products through manufacturing, production or their operational lifecycle.
An understanding of EMC requirements, electrical safety and the importance of regulatory compliance.
A practical, solutions-focused approach and the confidence to work closely with engineers, technicians and production teams.
You don't need to have worked with the exact products our client manufactures. What's important is your ability to understand complex electronic systems, investigate problems and apply your engineering knowledge across different technologies.
Additional Experience That Would Be Beneficial
Experience in any of the following areas would be advantageous:
Embedded systems, microcontrollers or firmware development, particularly STM32, C or C++.
Motor control, stepper motors, servo systems or electronic feedback systems.
FPGA technology, including Intel FPGAs.
Precision measurement equipment, instrumentation or industrial control systems.
Mechatronics, robotics or complex electromechanical equipment.
Product compliance, EMC testing, electrical safety or machinery safety.
Electronic systems integration and technical documentation.
Experience in every area is not expected. We are looking for someone with strong core electronics design skills and demonstrable technical expertise in at least one specialist area.
Relevant Industry Backgrounds
We would welcome applications from engineers working within:
Scientific or industrial instrumentation and measurement equipment.
Specialist electronics manufacturing and industrial control systems.
Oil and gas safety systems, public address and general alarm equipment.
Industrial printing, automation, robotics or mechatronics.
High-value, low-volume electronic or electromechanical equipment.
Other specialist engineering environments involving complex electronic systems and hands-on product support.
Future Development
Alongside technical ability, we're looking for someone who communicates well, enjoys collaborating with others and is comfortable sharing knowledge with colleagues.
There is genuine potential for the successful candidate to take on greater technical responsibility and develop into a leadership or management position as the department evolves.
Previous management experience would be beneficial but is not essential. An interest in mentoring others, supporting team development and potentially progressing into leadership would be welcomed.
Why Consider This Opportunity?
This is an opportunity to work on technically interesting, high-value equipment where your engineering decisions have a direct impact on product performance and manufacturing.
