Job description

Senior / Associate Structural Engineer
Leicester

Not every Structural Engineering consultancy gets to work on theme park attractions, complex timber structures, bespoke sculptures and unusual architectural projects. This one does.

I'm working with a well-established engineering consultancy that's been operating for over 50 years and has built an excellent reputation for delivering structural engineering solutions across the UK. With several offices throughout the Midlands, they're now looking to strengthen their Leicester team with the appointment of a Senior or Associate Structural Engineer.

This is a business that offers a genuinely varied workload. Alongside more conventional residential, commercial and industrial developments, they've developed particular expertise in complex and bespoke structures, heritage buildings, conservation projects and sustainable design. It's the sort of environment where no two projects are necessarily the same, and where experienced engineers are encouraged to get involved in the wider delivery of projects rather than being restricted to technical design alone.

The level of responsibility will depend on your experience, but the intention is to bring in someone who can take ownership of projects, develop relationships with clients and provide technical guidance to the wider structures team. You'll be involved from the early stages of a scheme, working alongside architects, developers and contractors to develop practical structural solutions, through to detailed design, construction and completion. There will be a mixture of hands-on engineering and project management, including preparing and reviewing calculations, specifications and technical reports, carrying out structural appraisals and attending design and progress meetings.

For those joining at Associate level, there will also be the opportunity to take on greater responsibility for project finances, resource planning, technical oversight and supporting the development of less experienced engineers. The existing team includes Chartered Engineers, experienced Structural Engineers and graduates, so you'll be joining an established technical environment with the opportunity to contribute to its continued development.

They're open to speaking with experienced Senior Structural Engineers looking for their next step, as well as those already operating at Associate level who might be interested in a different working environment or a more varied project portfolio. Ideally, you'll have at least six years' experience within a structural engineering consultancy, with a strong background in building structures and a good understanding of the different materials and construction techniques involved.

You'll need to be comfortable managing projects, communicating directly with clients and contractors, and taking responsibility for technical delivery. Chartership through IStructE or ICE would be advantageous, particularly at Associate level, although engineers progressing towards Chartership will also be considered. Beyond the technical requirements, they're keen to find someone who enjoys working collaboratively, can offer guidance to junior members of the team and is comfortable taking responsibility for their own workload.

There's a lot to be said for joining a consultancy that's been established for this long but still maintains the variety and flexibility to get involved in genuinely interesting engineering projects. You'll have the opportunity to work across a broad range of sectors, develop your own client relationships and take on a level of responsibility that reflects your experience.

The business also offers a competitive benefits package, including 25 days' annual leave plus bank holidays, annual profit share, private healthcare, funded professional subscriptions and training, alongside flexible working hours. For someone looking to progress from Senior to Associate, or an existing Associate who wants a role with a good balance of technical engineering, project management and client involvement, this could be well worth exploring.
