Job description

Multiskilled Maintenance Engineer

Rochdale | £40,000–£45,000 | Three Weeks of Days, One Week of Afternoons

A predominantly day-based maintenance role offering varied technical work across injection moulding, blow moulding and automated production equipment.

5S Recruitment is supporting an established international manufacturer of plastic packaging and specialist moulded products. The business is looking for a practical Multiskilled Maintenance Engineer who can resolve breakdowns, improve machinery reliability and help prevent recurring faults.

You will join a collaborative engineering team, working closely with Production, Process Engineering and Quality to keep equipment running safely and efficiently.

The Working Pattern

Three weeks out of every four:

  • Monday–Thursday: 7:00am–3:30pm

  • Friday: 7:00am–3:00pm

Every fourth week:

  • Monday–Thursday: 12:00pm–8:30pm

  • Friday: 12:00pm–8:00pm

The established pattern combines predominantly day-based hours with an earlier Friday finish on both shifts. Some occasional flexibility may be required to support production.

What’s on Offer

  • £40,000–£45,000, depending on experience.

  • Company pension.

  • An established position within an international manufacturing business.

  • A supportive engineering team and close cooperation with production colleagues.

  • Varied machinery, technical challenges and opportunities to influence engineering improvements.

The Role

As a Multiskilled Maintenance Engineer, you will provide planned and reactive maintenance across production machinery, ancillary equipment and site services.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Diagnose and repair electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic and control-system faults.

  • Respond to breakdowns, restore production safely and communicate outstanding issues.

  • Complete planned preventative maintenance and identify developing equipment problems.

  • Investigate repeat failures and implement corrective actions that address the underlying cause.

  • Maintain injection moulding, blow moulding and automated production equipment.

  • Support machine setup and recommissioning following mould changes.

  • Work with Process Engineering to establish effective machine settings and consistent production methods.

  • Help operators and setters develop their understanding of machine setup and basic fault identification.

  • Contribute to projects targeting downtime, scrap, cycle times and overall equipment effectiveness.

  • Maintain accurate engineering records and support ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 requirements.

  • Promote safe working, good housekeeping and practical 5S standards throughout the department.

What You’ll Bring

We are looking for an engineer with at least five years’ maintenance experience in manufacturing, supported by strong electrical and mechanical fault-finding skills.

You should offer:

  • A multiskilled or mechatronic engineering background.

  • Working knowledge of PLC-controlled machinery and industrial control systems.

  • Experience maintaining automated production equipment.

  • A methodical approach to diagnosis, planned maintenance and breakdown prevention.

  • The ability to work independently and remain composed when production is under pressure.

  • Clear communication skills and a willingness to share knowledge with engineering and production colleagues.

Injection moulding or blow moulding experience would be particularly valuable. A 17th or 18th Edition electrical qualification would be advantageous, although it is not essential.

Machinery Experience

Experience with Krupp Kautex, KraussMaffei, Negri Bossi, BMB or Battenfeld equipment would be useful. Engineers familiar with other injection moulding, extrusion blow moulding, robotics or automated manufacturing systems will also be considered.

Who This Will Suit

You enjoy being on the shop floor, understanding how equipment behaves and solving problems thoroughly. You can take ownership of a repair while recognising when to involve colleagues, and you care about the reliability of the machine after you have handed it back to production.

For an experienced Multiskilled Maintenance Engineer seeking predominantly day-based hours and the opportunity to make a measurable contribution to manufacturing performance, this is a role worth discussing.
