Earthworks Manager – Leicester
Our client, a principal contractor specialising in rail infrastructure projects, is seeking an experienced Earthworks Manager to oversee earthworks and soil-related activities across their client's site in Leicester. The successful candidate will provide technical support, coordinate project activities, undertake inspections, and ensure all works are delivered in accordance with Network Rail standards. Previous experience managing earthworks on major civil engineering, infrastructure or railway projects is required and a good understanding of soils, earthworks materials, compaction and testing.
Responsibilities:
Plan, manage and coordinate all earthworks activities, including:
- Site clearance and topsoil stripping.
- Bulk excavation and muck shift operations.
- Cut and fill activities.
- Embankment construction, remediation and modification.
- Excavation to formation.
- Capping and formation preparation.
- Ground improvement and stabilisation where required.
- Construction and maintenance of haul roads and working platforms.
- Stockpile establishment and management.
- Material processing, segregation and reuse.
- Import and export of earthworks materials.
- Reinstatement and finishing works.
- Ensure appropriate resources, plant, labour, materials and supervision are available to achieve planned production outputs.
- Take ownership of the day-to-day earthworks operation and ensure activities are effectively coordinated with the wider construction programme.
- Work closely with the Project Manager, Maintenance Manager and planning team to develop and maintain detailed earthworks programmes.
- Take responsibility for the effective management of excavated and imported materials.
- Develop and maintain an understanding of the project's cut/fill requirements and earthworks material balance.
- Ensure materials are appropriately classified, segregated, stockpiled and managed.
- Maximise the beneficial reuse of suitable site-won material wherever technically, environmentally and commercially appropriate.
- Coordinate imported fill, capping and other construction materials.
- Manage disposal of unsuitable or surplus material in accordance with project and environmental requirements.
- Comply with the company’s HSQE policies and all other company policies applicable to the effective discharge of your role
- Review and contribute to Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) and ensure these are communicated effectively to the workforce.
Person Specification
Significant experience managing earthworks on major civil engineering, infrastructure or railway projects.
Strong practical knowledge of bulk excavation, cut/fill, embankments and formation construction.
Experience managing significant earthmoving plant and equipment.
Experience managing earthworks subcontractors.
Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, programmes and earthworks information.
Strong understanding of construction health and safety requirements.
Experience of working within a railway environment would be highly advantageous.
Appropriate CSCS management-level qualification/card.
SMSTS or equivalent.
Temporary Works awareness or relevant training.
